Playing action video games boosts visual motor skills

So far there’s been little analysis of the link between visuomotor control and gaming, but the researchers say spending time on the PlayStation or Xbox could be a cheap and easy way of getting people sharper and trained up for the road. For the first part of the study, a driving simulation was used to measure the response times of seasoned gamers (those playing at least five hours a week for the past six months) against newbies. It turns out the gamers were much better at sticking to their lane and dealing with adverse conditions. The researchers then attempted to prove causality by training up volunteers with no gaming experience. One group spent their time playing Mario Kart, while the other trained on the much more sedate Rollercoaster Tycoon III. In the end, unsurprisingly, the karters were found to be much more improved in terms of motor skills. “our research shows that playing easily accessible action video games for as little as five hours can be a cost-effective tool to help people improve essential visuomotor-control skills used for driving,” said the lead researcher, Li Li of New York University Shanghai in China.

Martin Aguilar on Aug 14, 2018 driving in the Philippines–specifically in Metro Manila –requires utmost attention and long-lasting patience. A driver needs to be aware of their surroundings at all times and be on the lookout for motorcycles that are running at the right-hand side of the car, a vehicle that abruptly switches lanes or a pedestrian that suddenly decides to cross the street. Overall, a driver has to have quick motor skills to see and react to different traffic scenarios while he/she is on the road. How can you improve such skills? well, one option is to follow the famous “practice makes perfect” mantra. On the other hand, you can start playing video games–such as Gran Turismo Sport. Yes, video games can actually improve driving skills; and science can support that claim. A study conducted by new york university shanghai states that playing video games can boost the individual’s ability to coordinate incoming visual information with their motor control. Motor skills are considered as one of the critical and important factors in real-world driving. The said research was published in the journal of the association for psychological science. The lead author of the study, Li Li, said that their research showed “that playing easily accessible action video games for as little as five hours can be a cost-effective tool to help improve essential visuomotor-control skills used for driving. “Li and her team used a driving simulator and invited two groups of participants (gamers and non-gamers) to be part of the study. The result showed that gamers have better precision in “keeping to their lane, and showed less deviation in the face of increasing headwinds” as compared to non-gamers.

Can you improve your motor skills using video games?

Computer games and fine motor skills

Our research shows that playing easily accessible action video games for as little as 5 hours can be a cost-effective tool to help people improve essential visuomotor-control skills used for driving, says researcher Li Li of New York University Shanghai, lead author on the study. Experience playing some types of video games has been shown to confer benefits for specific visual abilities, such as sensitivity to contrast and visuospatial attention. Despite the fact that many video games place high demands on visuomotor abilities, little research had investigated whether playing such games was associated with visuomotor control.

Li, with co-authors Rongrong Chen (The University of Hong Kong) and Jing Chen (The University of Hong Kong), devised a series of studies to explore the possible link. Using a driving simulation, the researchers compared the visuomotor abilities of experienced players of action video games (those who had played at least 5 hours per week over the previous 6 months) to participants who had negligible action video game experience. The participants saw a display that showed a simulated road with lane markers. In three 95-second trials, they were tasked with steering a virtual vehicle down the lane, straying as little as possible from the center while compensating for crosswinds that affected the direction of the car.

Participants performance on the task showed that experience mattered: Experienced action gamers showed much greater precision in keeping to their lane, and showed less deviation from center in the face of increasing headwinds when compared to the participants with little to no action video game experience. The researchers saw similar results when they tested participants on another visuomotor control task that involved using a joystick to keep a target dot from floating away from the center of the screen.

To establish a causal link between action video games and visuomotor control skills, Li and colleagues recruited participants who had no action video gaming experience to take part in a training study. The participants were randomly assigned to either an action video game group or a control group, and they completed a total of 10 1-hour training sessions. The action video game group trained by playing Mario Kart, using a steering-wheel controller to drive a go-cart on a track. The control group played Roller Coaster Tycoon III, using a mouse and keyboard to build and maintain amusement parks. The two games featured similarly complex visual scenes and were both relatively easy to learn.

Importantly, the two groups showed similar levels of engagement with the games and similar improvements in performance over time. The data showed that playing Mario Kart, a fast-paced action video game, improved participants visuomotor control skills on the target dot task after 5 hours of training; they showed even greater improvement after 10 training sessions.

Those who played Roller Coaster Tycoon, a non-action strategy game, showed no such improvement over time. Additional data showed that visuomotor benefits weren’t limited to action games that involve driving. In a similar study, the researchers found that participants who had no action gaming experience also demonstrated improved visuomotor control after playing Unreal Tournament, a first-person-shooter (FPS) game.

So, can you improve your motor skills using video games? Intriguingly, the two kinds of action games had different effects on specific aspects of visuomotor control, suggesting that they may be suited as training tools for somewhat different audiences. The differing effects of driving and FPS video games on the sensorimotor system suggest that for experienced drivers, who have stable control but need to improve their ability to predict input error signals, training with FPS rather than driving video games is more effective, Li explains. In contrast, for novice drivers, who are still struggling with obtaining stable control, training with driving rather than FPS video games is more helpful.

The study seeks to determine the influence of computer games on fine motor skills in young adults, an area of incomplete understanding and verification. We hypothesized that computer gaming could have a positive influence on basic motor skills, such as precision, aiming, speed, dexterity, or tremor. We examined 30 habitual game users (f/m – 3/27; age range 20-25 years) of the highly interactive game counter strike, in which players impersonate soldiers on a battlefield, and 30 age- and gender-matched subjects who declared never to play games.

Selected tests from the vienna test system were used to assess fine motor skills and tremor. The results demonstrate that the game users scored appreciably better than the control subjects in all tests employed. In particular, the players did significantly better in the precision of arm-hand movements, as expressed by a lower time of errors, 1. 6 ± 0. 6 vs. 2. 8 ± 0. 6 s, a lower error rate, 13. 6 ± 0. 3 vs. 20. 4 ± 2. 2, and a shorter total time of performing a task, 14. 6 ± 2. 9 vs. 32. 1 ± 4. 5 s in non-players, respectively; p < 0. 001 all. The findings demonstrate a positive influence of computer games on psychomotor functioning. We submit that playing computer games may be a useful training tool to increase fine motor skills and movement coordination.

When we hear the word “learn” we often think of children sitting in a classroom, at a desk, with a teacher educating students on a particular subject. We rarely ever imagine playing a game as a teaching and learning tool. However, the benefits of utilizing this can span more developmental areas than learning about a single subject through lecture and worksheets. As O. Fred Donaldson said, “children learn as they play. More importantly, in play, children learn how to learn. ”children between the ages of 7 and 9-years old are what most people consider “the golden age. ”

They are at a unique growth period in their life. They are proficient in their vocabulary and problem-solving skills, yet they are not at the age where they want complete independence from adults. They are refined in their gross motor skills but are still establishing a foundation in core skill development. Children at this age are extremely bright and are very enthusiastic.

They love a challenge and enjoy the spotlight. However, they often get frustrated when things don’t go their way and are just learning to tap into their emotions. Distractions can be a challenge for them as well. For this age group, a program that involves game-based learning is extremely effective. Since they are generally excited about new things, utilizing games as a method of learning will keep their eagerness high and learning continues to be associated with a strong positive emotion. This will keep them coming back for more! and even better, they develop skills that benefit them in all four stages of development.

Language learning in particular seems a perfect place to try “gamified” classes. He has previously suggested that while technology in classrooms is seen as useful, there is no strategy for using it — and this is where my research comes in. What i’m aiming to do is find that strategy and try to answer the following questions: how video games might help, why some students might prefer playing a video game to being in class, and what areas of language learning a teacher could improve with this technology.

It’s a lot easier now with the rosetta stone app, but you still need at least 30 minutes to complete a core lesson.

As a psychologist friend of mine said after attending a neuroscience seminar, “learning a new language is like sending your brain to the gym. ”. Hard as it is to believe on those days when we forget our best friend’s name, our brain is always developing, and if we set it some hard tasks, we’ll be rewarded.

Studies show that it’s best to acquire a language through both active and passive learning, and watching shows in a foreign language involves both. Trying to figure out a word that a character in a telenovela is saying would be an example of active learning, and admiring the character’s outfit while hearing spanish in the background would be an example of passive learning, she said. “friends” has similar storylines about 20-somethings in new york city. “telenovelas have a predictable structure: they have a problem, and they find a solution. You can follow the plot pretty easily,” baese-berk said. She and other experts add that although watching shows goes a long way, it’s best to pair it with formal language training to learn grammar and structure.

And the choice isn’t easy: thousands of computer programming languages exist , and dozens more are being created every year. Even if you narrow down your choices to only the most popular ones, there are still a lot to choose from. It can be hard to know which language is best when you’re not a programmer yet, but you don’t have to understand everything about each programming language to choose the one that’s right for you.

Does immersive virtual reality improve language learning?

The Best Video Games For Learning Languages

Have you ever wondered what the most effective way to learn a new language is? there are several, and certainly, pimsleur’s language programs are top among them. But it turns out that video games can also be an effective tool for learning a language quickly. Several scientific research studies have found that video games can help users learn a second language. Indeed, a large synthesis of research has shown that, in general, video games can be a very effective language learning tool. And i’ve seen how effective they can be in my own life. I’m an english teacher in brazil. I’ve noticed that my students that have the best english are gamers. They grew up playing video games at a time when there were not very many options to play in portuguese. So, instead, they played in english. Now they’re fluent or close to it. That could be you, too. Studies have also shown that we spend an average of 5 to 6. 5 hours a week playing video games. They’re one of the most popular leisure activities in the world, especially among adults, with more than two billion users worldwide. If this is such a popular tool, why not use the time spent gaming for improving or learning a new language?.

Okay, you might not be able to dunk your textbooks into the trash entirely. But pairing traditional learning with a few weekly hours of learning languages with video games (a. K. A. Virtual immersion) is effective for several reasons. (of course, you’ll have to switch the game into your target language. You can’t play call of duty in english and expect to learn chinese. )first, immersion. Outside of moving to a new country, role playing games are the most immersive experience that you can have—unlike watching a film or listening to music, it’s not passive. You become a character.

You live in their virtual world. Imagine walking through narrow polish streets, hearing a woman shout, “pomóż mi!” (the witcher iii) or fighting to save your kingdom as your best friend begs you in german, “enttäusche mich nicht” (final fantasy xv). How will you help the woman? how will you save your comrade? by thinking on your feet! you’ll have to master through the language quickly if you want to beat the game. Every minute matters.

Secondly, entertainment.

Games are just—fun! when you have fun, you want to keep going back. A little bit of excitement keeps you from burning out, so schedule in game time just as you would any other study activity; i often replace a day of studying with an hour of my favorite german-language rpg. This tactic might seem strange, but at the end of that hour, i am refreshed, excited and armed with a long list of new vocabulary words.

Gamelearn team game-based learning has become the best solution for soft skills learning. While classroom training and traditional e-learning formats are less didactic, hard to implement and costly, game-based courses are the best way to train soft skills in a fun, consistent and inexpensive way. The combination of gamification and game-based learning is commonly used in the development of serious games, however it is important to know exactly what each of these terms refer to. While gamification is the use of different motivating elements such as score cards that foster competition between users, game-based learning is linked to the cognitive area of the product, its appearance and its visual attractiveness. In short, students are won over by the techniques used in game-based learning and captivated by the contents. The main characteristics of game-based learning are: the learning process takes place through different and attractive scenarios the learning process is based on overcoming different challenges the learning experience is positive and interesting its also important to highlight the fact that to create efficient game based learning it is essential to integrate a simulator that creates real situations which enable students to practice the skills. When we refer to soft skills training the use of video games is specially interesting. Soft skills need to be practiced in order to ensure learning.

I’ve been using Duolingo for about 4 years now so I’ve seen it undergo a lot of changes over the years. On the whole I think it’s a great app that is providing a valuable service for free. It’s great for dipping your toes in the water of a new language and making yourself familiar with a lot of vocabulary and grammatical structure. In order to gain higher levels of fluency, though, you do need to branch out into other forms of learning such as watching films in said language, etc.I would make one complaint about the app.

Although most of the changes over the years have been for the better, the process of the developers rolling out the changes can be pretty tedious. One day you will be able to double your gems by watching an ad, the next day you’re not given the choice to watch any ads. I think the experience could be improved by the developers being a bit more measured in how they role out changes.

It would be better if as a user I was notified about any changes that were going to take place prior to them taking place, maybe being told that I’m in a test group so the changes may revert after a time and maybe even a reason why the change is being made. It’s nice to be kept in the loop.

Extensive research has already been conducted for decades on the effects of gaming. Studies were done to determine how quickly students could learn the Spanish alphabet as well as how to conjugate ser and the estar conjugation. In each case, students learned the material more quickly by playing Spanish games to learn Spanish rather than by attending classes on the topic. The conclusion is that playing Spanish games to learn Spanish boosts children’s learning, health and social skills. This directly contradicts the widely heal view that playing Spanish games is intellectually lazy. Playing Spanish games to learn Spanish actually strengthens a range of cognitive skills such as reasoning, memory and perception.

This is particularly true for games related to learning a language. In the classroom, most students have difficulty learning when to correctly use the subjunctive vs indicative tenses. Several studies performed in 2015 found that students mastered this challenge much more quickly by playing Spanish games to learn Spanish as opposed to attending academic Spanish courses. On what she was expecting to do at the Spanish final. I expected to win.

I really wanted the gold medal, but being on the medal podium for the second time at the Olympic Games is also very important. I guess the closet isn’t the best place to learn the Spanish language. So dont puff yourself up over your kid learning to talk- chances are that that wouldve happened anyway. Lots to learn. But I am a bit of as an old dog and it is hard for me to learn new tricks. Your sister looks charming and I hope will persevere in learning Spanish. Working ,sport, meeting friends ,learning ,religion. It is great ,can learn something from someones article. Im trying to learn how to publish, retrieve, organize, etc.

Cards and Snake and Ladder games kept us engaged whenever our eyes were open. The attractiveness of learning this new segment was the only positive for me to take up the Bangalore job. Im one of those people who need to learn by being shown. Everyday I learn something new!!! Spanish games are fun. Will I ever learn to keep things to myself. Im not with you to play games, and I know you feel the same.

Sometimes I wonder why I do the things I do and why I do not learn from my mistakes. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change , grow or live. And you learn the importance of loving and championing yourself, and in the process a sense of newly found confidence is born of self-approval. You stop bitching and blaming other people for the things they did to you (or didnt do for you) and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected. You learn that not everyone will always be there for you, and that its not always about you. So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself and in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.

Do video games improve your dexterity?

Educational Games for Kids

For broader coverage of this topic, see serious game. Educational games are games explicitly designed with educational purposes, or which have incidental or secondary educational value. All types of games may be used in an educational environment, however educational games are games that are designed to help people learn about certain subjects, expand concepts, reinforce development, understand a historical event or culture, or assist them in learning a skill as they play. Game types include board , card , and video games. As educators, governments, and parents realize the psychological need and benefits that gaming has on learning, this educational tool has become mainstream.

Games are interactive play that teach us goals, rules, adaptation, problem solving, interaction, all represented as a story. They satisfy our fundamental need to learn by providing enjoyment, passionate involvement, structure, motivation, ego gratification, adrenaline, creativity, social interaction and emotion in the game itself while the learning takes place. Main articles: educational video game and video games in education. With the increase and availability of technological devices, there has been a shift in what types of games people play. Video or electronic gaming has become more widely used than traditional board games. For instance, the game of hide and seek. Good hiders need visual and spatial perspective to define the best hiding places, while seekers must be skilled at searching for cues from the surroundings and choosing the most probable location for the hider among various possible places. A systematic review investigated the effects of educational games for mental health students.

In his classical essay, “upon the aesthetic education of man”, Friedrich Schiller discusses play as a force of civilization, which helps humans rise above their instincts and become members of enlightened communities. He states that “humans are only fully human when they play”. While the text is limited by the author’s beliefs in concepts such as freedom and beauty, it nevertheless sets the stage for johan huizinga ‘s classical study, homo ludens.

Games have long been employed as a means of education. Using the ancient game of chess, noblemen of the middle ages learned strategies of war. During the civil war, volunteers from rhode island played american kriegsspiel , which had originally been created in 1812 for training prussian officers-of-war. Then, in the early 19th century, came the creation of kindergarten by friedrich fröbel , which was based on learning through play. Children delighted in his fröbel gifts , simple educational toys such as blocks, sewing kits, clay, and weaving materials.

According to richard n. Van eck, there are three main approaches to creating software that stimulates cognitive growth in the gamer. These three approaches are: building games from scratch created by educators and programmers; integrate commercial off-the-shelf (cots); and creating games from scratch by the students. The most time- and cost-effective approach to designing these educational games is to incorporate cots games into the classroom with the understanding of the learning outcomes the instructor has for the course. This requires the teacher to buy into the positive results of using digital games for education. It also requires teachers to have adequate self-efficacy concerning the use of these games and their technology.

The students usually have high amounts of self-efficacy in usage of digital games, while the lack of confidence teachers have in incorporating the digital games usually results in less effective educational use of the games. However, gerber and price (2013) have found that teachers’ inexperience with digital games does not preclude them from the desire to incorporate them in class instruction, but districts must have in place support through regular professional development, supportive learning communities with their colleagues, and adequate financial support to implement game-based learning in their class instruction. Games often have a fantasy element that engages players in a learning activity through narrative or storylines.

Educational video games can motivate children and allow them to develop an awareness of consequentiality. Children are allowed to express themselves as individuals while learning and engaging in social issues. Today’s games are more social , with most teens playing games with others at least some of the time and can incorporate many aspects of civic and political life. In classrooms, social game-based learning platforms are increasing in popularity, as they purport to enable students to reinforce knowledge and develop social and leadership skills. [ citation needed ]. The success of game-based learning strategies owes to active participation and interaction being at the center of the experience, and signals that current educational methods are not engaging students enough. Experience with and affinity for games as learning tools is an increasingly universal characteristic among those entering higher education and the workforce. Game-based learning is an expansive category, ranging from simple paper-and-pencil games like word searches all the way up to complex, massively multiplayer online (mmo) and role-playing games. They usually make up case studies designed to introduce students to certain technologies in an effort to prepare them for a future major assignment that requires the aforementioned technology. They have also been developed to work in the virtual world. More recently educational egames have been developed for higher education students, combining real-world case studies in a virtual environment for students to have a consistent, 24/7 educational ‘virtual’ experience. In some public schools implementing common core standards , game-based learning programs are utilized by educators to supplement their teaching programs.

According to a recent case study by an ed tech-based nonprofit organization, teachers find some digital learning games help address issues with alignment in common core. In the future, technology and games are expected to be used in simulation environments to simulate real world issues. In the professional sector, such as flight training, simulations are already used in an effort to prepare pilots for training before actually going out into planes. These training sessions are used to replicate real life stresses without the risk factor associated with flying. Simulation-games are used in other professional areas as well; a spy-themed learning game has been used to improve sales skills at avaya and a 3d simulation game has been used to train new york city emergency responders. Before deciding how to use game-based learning, the trainer must first determine what they would like the trainees to learn. A trainer that fails to focus training around a central idea runs the risk of using a game that fails to connect with the learners. To prevent this, tailor the material to the demographic (age group, familiarity, educational pre-text) so that the material is neither too difficult for, nor too familiar to the learner.

Gathering ideas from children early in the design process has yielded useful insights into what children want in technology in general or in a specific type of application. Children’s early involvement in requirements gathering has revealed clues about gender differences in preferences related to technology, children’s navigation skills, ways of presenting textual information, application-specific content-related preferences, the variety of elements to be included in user interfaces and their structures, and children’s desire to personalize their applications. Multiplayer role playing games (mmo’s) provide opportunities for players to improve such skills as, “complex learning, thinking, and social practices”. Mmo`s also provide a social network which can favor collaborative gaming and learning and contribute to the formation of teams, communication within a group and help strengthen individual and communal identities.

As a dedicated video gamer, i found this article (warning: math) extremely interesting. Now, the real point of the article is to to establish causation between time spent studying and educational achievement, so let me explain that before i get to the games. The authors find the effect of an additional hour of studying a day is equivalent to, on average, an increase in first-semester gpa of 0. 38. That’s equivalent to bumping two c’s to b’s, or two b’s to a’s – about an increase of 6% for one’s overall average on a percentage scale. This result also indicates that how well someone does in university depends heavily on how much work is put in, since assuming study effort is subject to diminishing returns would imply that the difference between no studying and putting in the average amount of work improves 4-point gpa by in excess of 1. 33 points, or 20% on the percentage scale (likely somewhat more) – enough to turn someone who typically earns c’s into an honour student, maybe more. Again, not a surprise, unless you believe that university performace is determined predominately by intelligence, which is hard to defend via common sense, but it’s a result that often pops up in these kind of papers, which the authors claim are statistically flawed for reasons i won’t go into.

Any parent of a young child with adhd knows that these kids often lack the capacity for self-regulation. This is particularly true when it comes to pleasurable activities that invite and reward hyperfocus. Thus, parents must be the ones to set and enforce limits — especially with children who have already become used to video-game overuse. Both parents must first agree on a set of rules. This task is often the hardest. How long can our child play on school nights? must homework be done first? chores? how about on weekends? which games are forbidden entirely (see “kid-friendly content,” at bottom)? if our child wants to play internet-based games, which sites are ok?. [ the neuroscience behind video game addiction ]. Sit down with your child to discuss the rules and explain how they’ll be enforced. Let’s say, your daughter is allowed to spend 30 minutes playing computer games on school nights. She can begin playing only after she’s finished her homework (and you’ve looked it over and helped her pack it in her book bag) and completed her chores (and you’ve checked them off on her chore chart). Then announce that the rules start now.

Gamers, defined as individuals who play computer or video games, have developed new and distinctive learning capacities. From the advent of Atari to the modern-day PlayStation 4 and World of Warcraft eSport competitions, skills that gamers have been developing and honing have also been shown to enhance capacity for learning acquisition, retention, and transfer. According to research done by the Pew Research Center, about half of American adults play video games. Therefore, as instructional designers and training content creators, understanding the concepts of how gaming enhances learning is important to the success of a program as a number of employee learners most likely either have this undiscovered and untapped acumen or would be able to develop it should gaming be introduced into the learning repertoire. Generally, video and computer games are designed so that players achieve a goal, whether it is to solve a puzzle, reach a new level, build something, or remain in the game against obstacles, hurdles, and interference. For learning, gaming is changing the ways in which we interact with our learning environments, as well as the skills for how we learn. The following are examples of how the skills learned while gaming can be applied to learning:

Gamers/Learners dive into the unknown, thrive on mystery, are willing to experiment, work with ambiguity, and make mistakes as they move their way through the game or simulation. They are comfortable knowing that the solution is not obvious yet is discoverable as they play. Within the gaming process, the neuroplasticity of the mind allows new pathways to be built based on the content and experience; and the more the pathways are created and reinforced, the better retention and recall the learner ultimately has. In the book entitled Research-Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning, by Judy Willis, the author shares: Multiple stimuli means better memory. The more regions of the brain that store data about a subject, the more interconnection there is. This redundancy means students will have more opportunities to pull up all those related bits of data from their multiple storage areas in response to a single cue. This cross-referencing of data strengthens the data into something we’ve learned rather than just memorized.Gamers/Learners also notice things necessary to complete the goal, solve the puzzle, and/or reach the next level. They instinctively look for patterns, arrangements, and implicit instructions that lead them to success: Effective online training courses use strategies to help students recognize patterns and then make the connections required to process the new working memories so they can travel into the brain’s long-term storage areas.

Furthermore, Dr. Rick Van Eck, an Instructional Design professor and expert in learning and gaming, shares his research on the benefits of gaming in education and learning design in his TEDxManitoba talk The Gaming of Educational Transformation. He believes that games revolutionize education by exposing students to the following experiences and concepts: Situated Cognition – a student learns within the environment in which he or she will demonstrate that knowledge. Much like Experiential Learning, students learn-by-doing, think on-the-fly, and learning is absorbed and generalized in relation to the activity, context, and culture. Systems Thinking – a student learns to view a game or situation within the context of how things interact as a whole, interdependent, complex, and dynamic constructs. Collaboration – a student critically works with others to achieve success in the game or simulations while developing skills in social negotiation, strategy, and emotional intelligence.

Problem Solving – a student is faced with a challenge or goal that requires the generation of new knowledge to find the solution. Engagement – a student does not rely on fun or motivation to complete the task, but rather a cognitive effort. Games introduce engagement through the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development or “The Goldilocks Zone” — meaning the challenge is not too easy, not too hard, but just right in order to keep the gamer/learner engaged and in the problem-solving cycle. Gaming, while fun, challenging, collaborative, and addictive to some, also creates new capacities and beneficial skills that can be exploited when creating learning solutions.

But, while a new study did find that video games may affect your kid’s grades , it’s not as bad as you might think. Gaming has been really popular for some time now. According to the pew research center, more than two-thirds of american adolescents report playing computer games. For many, online gaming has also became a new avenue for connection, as pew research center reported 57 percent of teens ages 13 to 17 have made friends online. The cultural impact of gaming has long been up for debate. Most people have heard video games take the blame for violence or aggression. And when it comes to school work, parents often worry that video games serve as a distraction. Besides, what could you possibly learn through games?. Video games’ true impact on kids’ grades hasn’t been entirely understood, thanks to mixed study results. In 2010, for instance, a study found that video games can hurt schoolwork.

Consider the age and maturity of your child and the games they are asking to play. When reviewing the esrb ratings and content descriptors, do the games seem to be a good fit for your child? if there are older gamers in the home, kids will often want to play the games they see being played rather than the ones that fit their age group. If the game being played by older kids isn’t appropriate, they probably shouldn’t be watching when their siblings play. Look at the gaming device your child will play on. Are the safety settings in place for your child? do they match his level of maturity and help you set appropriate boundaries with regards to the types of games allowed, who they are allowed to interact with, and the amount of time/times of day they can play? if not, be sure to configure these safety settings before your child starts gaming. Talk to your child about appropriate gaming. This conversation is crucial as it sets the framework for understanding and collaboration for gaming successfully. Talk about the safety settings you have put in place, about the types of games that are appropriate or inappropriate, about the time limitations and the importance of having a balanced experience with online gaming, friends, activities, and school.

I accustomed my ear to British pronunciation by playing FIFA, acquired a wealth of financial and bureaucratic slang in Hospital and Theme Park World, learned nuanced language when negotiating in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, lost the fear of historical vocabulary after a few campaigns in Caesar iii and Civilization, and leveled up my street skills in Grand Theft Auto.

Playing video games is a great way to let children, as well as adults, learn a new language spontaneously. Instead of looking down on video games, we should all see the benefits they bring and the possibilities you have when immersing yourself in a virtual world.

Playing a video game is a strong catalyst of language learning. Improving language helps us to be successful in the played game and the game helps us to be better in the second language. The question is, how can video games enhance language learning? “language learning through gameplay can happen in a wide variety of ways, from a planned learning activity in an instructional environment to an incidental by-product of a gamer’s interactions with the game and its associated online activities” (Godwin Jones)

My French Coach and my Spanish Coach are educational games developed by Sensory Sweep Studios and published by Ubisoft for the Nintendo DS, iOS, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. They are part of Ubisoft’s My Coach series and were released for the Nintendo DS on November 6, 2007, in North America, for the Wii on November 23, 2007, in Europe, and my Spanish Coach was released for the PlayStation Portable on October 7, 2008, and iOS on June 6, 2009. For their releases in Europe and Australia, the games were renamed my French Coach level 1: beginners and my Spanish coach level 1: beginners.

French and Spanish language teachers assisted with the development of the gameplay for both games, which concentrates on teaching french or Spanish using lessons and minigames. As the player progresses through the lessons, the gameplay uses increasingly complex words and phrases.

The games received praise and criticism from various video game publications; they praised the games’ effectiveness in teaching the language but lamented their repetitive nature. The next installments in the series titled my French Coach level 2: intermediate and my Spanish Coach level 2: intermediate, also developed and published by Ubisoft, were released in Europe on November 23, 2007, alongside their level 1 counterparts.

The most obvious benefit of playing video games in Spanish is how it allows you to learn the language in a completely different setting. You’ll have cues from other parts of the game that make it easier to pick up on what’s being said, so you’re not reading the words or hearing them spoken without any other clues.

Video games were designed for fun and if we’re able to do something enjoyable while learning the language then we’ll want to spend more time on it. There’s no need to feel guilty about playing games if you’re getting the added bonus of learning Spanish as well, so you can play for as many hours as your free time will permit. Finally, there are plenty of other benefits on top of learning languages. Video games can help with your logic skills, creativity, critical thinking, hand-eye coordination, and more. In addition to learning Spanish, you’ll be working on all other parts of your brain and keeping an active mind, so it’s a hugely beneficial way to pass the time.

Learning Spanish can also be a valuable asset. As the second most widely spoken language in the world, Spanish has more than 400 million speakers and is the native tongue in 20 different countries. The largest population of Spanish speakers reside in Central and South America, but there is also a considerable number of Spanish speakers, more than 40 million, in the United States. Spanish is also the second most widely spoken language in the US, and there are more Spanish speakers in America than live in Spain.

Picking up some basics in Spanish is relatively easy for beginners, especially those who speak a language like English, French, or Italian. Languages of the same family often share words that are cognates or have similarities because they are derived from the same mother tongue. This is why you’ll find English words like “red” that sound remarkably similar in French (rouge), Italian (rosso), and Spanish (rojo).

In addition to familiar-sounding vocabulary, you’ll discover Spanish also has a straightforward system of pronunciation, fewer irregularities than many other languages, and an alphabet similar to the English one. Rosetta Stone understands that beginners need to learn Spanish in context, building naturally towards speaking Spanish phrases and gaining confidence with the pronunciation.

That’s why our Spanish language software focuses on an immersion-based learning method that teaches words alongside visual and audio cues, helping beginners learn basic conversational phrases in the context of real-world situations. Rosetta Stone’s award-winning mobile app allows you to practise anywhere, syncs across all your devices, and offers downloadable lessons to support offline learning.

I’ve played just Dance 3. I’ve tried Dance Central 1 & 2. I’ve played this one and although I feel there is a big limitation of songs on this game – the dancing just feels “right”. Rather than copying static cards – this game actually shows you on screen what to do. So you trace the lines with your hands, hit the bubbles, etc. I love this way of dancing – it’s easier to follow than static cards. However, these movements won’t really teach you any cool dance moves. You might look a bit special but it’s fun and to me, that’s what’s important. What might bother people is the music selection. There is club, r&b, pop & para para. None of them are top hits. I think they were just from Konami’s music library but in my opinion they are a lot of fun – I would love it if they used top hits you can dance to but the music isn’t bad. There also isn’t many of them. There’s about 20-25 of them. People who are familiar with Japanese anime & manga would recognise the kinda genre that is para para. If you usually like anime intros and outros – then I think you would like this genre.

Dance central is essentially a better version of Just Dance for a more advanced crowd. The interface and songs offer a bit more variety, which is great since harmonix, who also made rock band, developed this. Related: Oculus Quest: 10 best games to play while dance moves are only tracked by one hand in just dance, the Xbox 360’s Kinect camera captures the whole body in this, making one have to work a little harder. Since this series has been Xbox exclusive for the two Kinect cameras, it may be a little harder to get into now.

Dance Central is a dancing rhythm game packed with an eclectic mix of music and dance moves from the artists, it hopes to redefine the way we play dance games. Dance Central is among the most visually polished of the Kinect launch titles. Gamers stand in front of their television and mimic the on-screen dancer as they dance to the choreographed moves rolling up the side of the screen. Motion, timing and a sense of rhythm are all vital. Too bad you can only teach people two of those things.

Dancing is fundamental in life. Since people have walked, people have danced. Human beings are born to dance – we have dancing in our genes, which means you do too. Dancing improves the quality of our lives and the health of societies. Ancient civilizations knew about the amazing powers of dance and dancing, and increasingly the modern world is re-discovering how important dance is for living happily and healthily and long, and how dancing can transform people in so many ways besides being great fun, dance delivers benefits that will amaze you. This extends to people you might teach or train or entertain or manage – or the children and the young people that you a parent or care for. For many thousands of years, across all cultures, and nations, and peoples, dancing has been vital to human life. Dancing is in our genes. The urge to dance – and to watch others dance – is deeply rooted in all of us. Dance is immensely significant in our health, wellbeing, and overall happiness. Dancing enriches us and enriches our communities. Dancing is truly global and its benefits and joys are infinite. Dance is far more beneficial and potent than we might imagine – as a way of living a happy good life, and helping others to be happy and healthy too. While experienced passionate brilliant dancers and dance teachers recognize and understand the wonderful powers that dancing gives people – of all ages – many people have yet to realize what dancing can do and enable. Dance promotes incredible benefits, and brings dramatic improvements, in motivation, personal development too. Dancing offers fabulous ways to motivate people towards brilliant achievements. Dancing also diffuses stress, and fosters wellbeing – really like nothing else can – in individuals and groups, and bigger communities and societies. Dancing is deeply embedded within us all… If the origins of humankind first appeared in Africa, then dancing first happened in Africa too, and this was at least 150,000 years ago. If instead the emergence of humankind is considered to be at least six million years ago, when humans separated from apes.. then we have been dancing for six million years. For those who believe that humankind was created with the world itself, then this is 14 billion years ago, and we have been dancing for 14 billion years. From most perspectives, Africa usually represents the oldest origins of dance – dancing for joy, for work, for play, for pleasure, for rain, for mating, for child-rearing, for ceremony and ritual, for a happy body – dancing for whatever was meaningful. Dance is as old as peoples existence on Earth, and arguably before – like we see many animal species dancing – bobbing, swaying, nodding, jumping, soaring, moving, and shaping, in response to the rhythms of nature – the wind in the trees – the ebb of the tide – the fall of the rain. And in modern times – after millions of years of dancing – we are still dancing… We are dancing our most basic human ways and in our most innovative modern ways. We are dancing traditional dances and modern dances and folk dances and street dances. Our dancing is increasingly and excitingly fused into countless different dance styles, reflecting the fabulous rhythmic diversity and creativity of people and cultures on our planet. Variations of dancing styles grow ever more astoundingly, particularly accelerated now by the globalized digitally and socially-connected video-sharing age.. and by young people more empowered, inspired, educated and confident than any previous generation. Dance styles are borrowed, blended, invented, and combined from every imaginable dance type – in amazing ways – From Jazz and Jive, Bollywood and Bhangra, Samba and Zumba®, Waltzing and Quickstepping, Disco and Dancehall, to Ballet and Tap, Flamenco and Folk, Breakdance and Swing, Belly and Burlesque, Hip-hop and Street… Wherever there is humanity, there will be dance and dancers dancing.
